Client: Nationwide ESCO

Scope: Estimate energy savings from campus-wide retrofit projects on a college campus.

Sample DOE-2 Model

kW Engineering created detailed DOE-2 models for principal buildings on a college campus. The models were created from original design drawings provided by the facility department. Building details and operating schedules were verified by our engineers on site. Data loggers were used to verify operating hours and control algorithms for key mechanical systems. The models were calibrated to monthly utility bills and used to estimate energy savings from efficiency measures as part of a comprehensive retrofit project. The results are being used as the basis for energy savings for a performance contract.

Energy Efficiency Measures Evaluated

  • DDC controls on air handlers and central plant equipment
  • Air handler refurbishments
  • Heating hot water variable flow conversions
  • Premium efficiency motor replacements
  • Improved hot water loop insulation
  • Miscellaneous control retro-commissioning measures

Projected Savings

  • 1,230,000 kWh per year
  • 96 kW peak demand
  • 205,000 therms per year
  • $400,000 per year in operating costs
